Quick answer

A ductless mini split is a heat pump with an outdoor unit and one or more slim indoor units, linked by a small line set through the wall. It heats and cools, with no ducts. It is a strong fit for older homes, additions, garages and rooms that never stay comfortable. Black Hills Energy lists a 2026 rebate for qualifying ductless heat pumps. A local technician can size, install or repair one.

Where a Ductless System Makes Sense

  • Older homes with no ducts, like many in the Union Avenue Historic District, Bessemer and the East Side.
  • Homes on boilers or wall heaters that want summer cooling too.
  • Additions and converted garages the main system cannot reach.
  • Upstairs rooms that bake every July.
  • Basements that stay cold all winter.
  • Shops and garages in Pueblo West, Beulah or Rye where a space heater just does not cut it.

How It Works

The outdoor unit holds the compressor. Copper refrigerant lines, a drain line and a control wire run through a hole about three inches wide to each indoor head. Each head has its own fan and remote or thermostat, so each room becomes its own zone.

Because a mini split system is a heat pump, it moves heat instead of making it. ENERGY STAR notes that ductless heat pumps are made for homes, or parts of homes, with no ductwork, including older homes and garages where adding ducts is hard.

Single Zone or Multi Zone

  • Single zone: one outdoor unit and one indoor head. Simple, efficient and good for one large room or an addition.
  • Multi zone: one outdoor unit with two or more heads. Handy for a whole older home, but sizing matters more. Every head needs to match its room.
  • Several single zones: some homes do better with two or three separate systems, so one failure does not take out the whole house.

Indoor Unit Styles

  • Wall mount: the most common and the lowest cost.
  • Floor console: sits low on the wall, good under windows or in rooms with sloped ceilings.
  • Ceiling cassette: set into the ceiling for a cleaner look.
  • Small ducted unit: hides in a closet or attic and serves a few rooms with short duct runs.

Winter Heat in Pueblo

Pueblo nights get cold, with an average January low near 15 degrees per NOAA normals. Look for a cold climate model if the system will be a main heat source. These are rated to keep more of their heating output in the cold. Many homes keep the old heat as backup for the coldest nights.

Rebates

The Black Hills Energy 2026 Colorado residential electric rebate form lists up to $1,500 for a qualifying ductless heat pump and up to $2,500 for a qualifying cold climate air source heat pump. The form says equipment must be installed in 2026 and the application sent by January 31, 2027. Read the current form for model rules before you buy.

What Your Technician Will Do

  1. Walk the space

They look at each room, its windows, sun and insulation, and where the outdoor unit and line set can go.

  2. Size each zone

Each head is sized for its own room, not one big number for the house.

  3. Plan the line set and drain

They plan a short, clean route for the lines and a drain that will not freeze or drip on a walkway.

  4. Install and test

A proper install includes a pressure test, a deep vacuum on the lines and a check of the charge.

  5. Show you the controls

You learn the remote, the modes and how to clean the filters.

Care and Upkeep

A mini split AC needs very little care, but skip it and the coil and filters clog fast:

  • Rinse the washable indoor filters every month or two.
  • Keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and set up on a stand so defrost water can drain.
  • Watch for drips or a musty smell from the indoor head. The coil and blower wheel can need a deep clean.
  • Have a technician check the system once a year.

Common Repairs

  • Flashing light codes: a sensor, board or communication fault.
  • Water dripping from the head: a clogged drain or a unit that is not level.
  • Weak heat or cooling: dirty filters, a dirty coil or a refrigerant leak at a flare fitting.
  • Ice on the outdoor unit that does not clear: a defrost problem.

Ductless Questions

How many indoor units do I need?

It depends on the layout. Open rooms may need one. Closed bedrooms often each need their own head.

Can one system heat my whole house?

In many small and mid sized Pueblo homes, yes, with the right number of heads and a cold climate unit. Larger homes may pair it with another system.

Is a permit needed?

In Pueblo, HVAC equipment work needs a mechanical and or electrical permit. Your contractor should pull it.

How loud are they?

Indoor heads are quiet, often quieter than a window AC. The outdoor unit makes a low hum.

Can I install one myself?

DIY kits exist, but refrigerant work and electrical connections carry rules and risks. Federal rules require EPA Section 608 certification to handle most refrigerants.
